We acknowledge that this update is being provided during the school holiday period. However, with further AEU industrial action proposed from 20 April 2026, it is important that members are informed. It is also important to note that Australian Principals Federation (APF) members are not protected under this proposed action.

APF negotiations with the Department of Education in relation to the Victorian Government Schools Agreement are ongoing, with the APF negotiating team continuing to advocate strongly on your behalf.

This work reflects a sustained and deliberate effort over time. Since late 2024, the negotiating team has worked closely with members to develop a comprehensive Log of Claims that accurately captures the increasing complexity, accountability and demands of the principal role. This Log of Claims was formally served on the Department in early June 2025, with regular meetings taking place since that time.

While progress has not been as fast as we would like, negotiations have not broken down. Our position remains clear, the most effective way to secure meaningful outcomes is through focused, disciplined engagement at the negotiating table.

Our position remains unchanged. Our priority is to secure improved pay and conditions for principal class employees, and at this stage, we believe this is best achieved through continued negotiation.

The negotiating team has carefully considered potential next steps, including escalation options. At this point in time, we are not taking industrial action. However, we are not ruling out any options for the future. We will continue to monitor the progress of negotiations and respond accordingly if required.

We recognise that this is an important and, at times, frustrating process. Please be assured that our approach is deliberate, measured and focused on achieving the best possible outcome for members. We are continuing to advocate strongly on your behalf, ensuring your interests are clearly represented in all discussions.

Further updates will be provided as negotiations progress.
